ARKANSAS POACHER SENTENCED

Larry BURROUGHS of Hot Springs, Arkansas appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Thomas Ray in Little Rock, Arkansas on July 12, 2006 to be sentenced for a waterfowl baiting violation.

In December 2005, a cooperative investigation between the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission revealed that BURROUGHS was baiting waterfowl. BURROUGHS was apprehended while hunting with guests on his duck club in Lincoln County, Arkansas. BURROUGHS admitted placing rice in his hunting area on multiple occasions during the 2005 hunting season. He also said that his guests were not aware of the bait and they were not charged. BURROUGHS was charged with a one count criminal information for the placement of bait. He entered a plea of guilty to the violation.

Magistrate Judge Ray sentenced BURROUGHS to pay a fine of $5,000.00 and placed BURROUGHS on probation for two years. As a special condition of probation, BURROUGHS is prohibited from hunting for one year. During sentencing, Judge Ray warned BURROUGHS that any subsequent violations would result in a prison term, and that it would be in his best interest to refrain from violating any wildlife laws in the future.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant US Attorney Jeff LaVicka.
