Special Agent Tom Cloherty


 
 
 

SA Thomas Cloherty, assigned to the East Orland, ME OLE office, was found dead at Acadia National Park this morning, Thursday December 8, 2005. Early in the morning he had talked with SA Eric Holmes and said he was going to go running in Acadia National Park. NPS Rangers later found his body in the vicinity of his vehicle. Preliminary indications are that death was of natural causes. His wife and four children were notified shortly before noon.

Dear Members, Friends and Colleagues,

The Federal Wildlife Officer's Association is saddened to inform you of loss of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Special Agent Tom Cloherty. Tommy was stationed in our East Orland, Maine office and had been with the Service for approximately 18 months.

Tom died Thursday morning, December 8, 2005 while on duty participating in the Agency's health and fitness program. He was running at Schoodic Point, Acadia National Park in Maine. Tom died of cardiac arrest. He was 37 years old. Tom is survived by his wife, Mary Catherine, and his four young children, Myles 8, Grace 6, Conan 3, and Aidan 18 months.

Tommy was born in New York City, and grew up in South Salem, NY. He graduated from John Jay High School in 1986, and he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in Troop 1 of Lewisboro. He attended Loyola College in Maryland, graduating in 1991. Tommy had a love of the sea, and served as first officer on the tall ships Pride of Baltimore II and Amistad and as Captain of the Pioneer and the Clipper City. He also worked on the restoration of the U.S.S. Constellation in Baltimore.

Soon after, he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard, attaining the rank of Lieutenant. He served aboard the U.S.C.G. Cutter Chase out of San Diego and also served in Pittsburgh, PA before achieving another dream, becoming a Fish and Wildlife Service Special Agent. Tommy was hired as a Special Agent with the Service in 2004, and was stationed in East Orland, Maine.

Tommy will always be remembered as a loving husband, father and a part of the wildlife enforcement family, as well as for the constant smile on his face, his enthusiasm for his work, and his zest for life. Above all, he loved his family the most, and made his wife and children his first priority.
